Definition of interventions used at Roseacre Junior School

Balance Education and Movement (BEAM and BEAM Plus)
A physical activity programme aimed to support children’s core muscles, posture and coordination skills. This helps the child develop classroom skills, such as the ability to sit still, to concentrate and listen, and hand-eye coordination. It was devised by paediatric physiotherapists and occupational therapists. As part of the programme members of the School therapy service visit the groups to review children’s progress and liaise with school staff.

Clever fingers
Clever Fingers is an activity package created and designed, by Occupational Therapists. It is used to support children with poor fine motor skills and difficulties in: dressing, using a knife and fork and scissors, as well as handwriting. Children work for about 10 minutes, either individually or in a small group, from a “Clever Fingers Box” which has been put together to meet the child’s individual needs. Activities include threading, posting, construction toys and plasticine moulding.

Clicker 6
A computerised programme for reading and writing. It encourages self-correction, promotes reading independence with talking books and provides students with picture support for sentence building. 

Communicate in Print
A computer program which produces widget symbols to represent words. It enables anyone with communication and/or learning difficulties or with English as an additional language to gain access to written information and communicate more independently. The symbols help children understand, remember and reinforce verbal instructions and information. 

Reading/Comprehension groups
An intervention to help improve a child’s reading accuracy plus their understanding of different types of texts. A variety of fiction and non-fiction books are used, including play scripts and poetry. Questions are answered verbally and in a written format. 

Keyboard skills/Touch Typing skills
We use the BBC “Dance Mat”, a structured progressive programme which introduces keyboard skills and touch typing to aid and improve touch typing speed. 

Language Link groups
Junior Language Link is a computerised assessment package that gives teachers and teaching assistants the ability to screen for the child’s understanding of the spoken language. It offers information and resources to implement appropriate support programmes and strategies which are used with identified children.

Lego Therapy
A practical activity involving 3 children. The children are given set roles-an engineer, a supplier and a builder and they work together to build a Lego model.

It helps children to develop problem solving skills. It also develops their speaking and listening skills, as they are encouraged to provide directional language, receive and follow instructions. They learn to tolerate being corrected by others and to engage in interaction with their peers. 

Memory Magic
A computerised program that helps children improve their memory skills, teaching flexible memory strategies and provides practice in applying these strategies.

Numbershark is a computer program that combines the fun and excitement of bright, multi-sensory games with the serious task of learning basic number skills, including number bonds and times tables. 

Plus, One and the Power of Two
A daily one to one numeracy intervention which supports children with difficulties in grasping and retaining key numerical concepts. It involves repeated practice and explanation and gives pupils a great sense of achievement as they work their way through the book.

Precision Monitoring
This is a precise and systematic method of learning based on the learner's personal fluency.

It is a daily one to one provision which focuses on over learning and repetition. It can be literacy or numeracy based and is tailored to the individual child and their needs. It is taught in 3 steps over 10 minutes. The child is taught for 8 minutes, on 5 items, using motivating activities and games, then they are tested on what they have been taught. After feedback from this, their results are plotted onto a graph to show their progress. This process is repeated daily until what they have been learning is secure, they will then move on to the next 5 items. 

Sensory Circuits
Sensory Circuits is a series of activities designed specifically to wake up all the senses in readiness for the busy day at school. Sensory circuits help to improve: balance, coordination, awareness of body position and sensory integration. It leads to improvements in alertness and co-ordination in class and a “just right” state of mind through a series of alerting, organising and calming activities.

Social stories
These are personalised stories which are drawn up with the child to suit their particular need and/or anxieties. The child will read this daily and at specific times of need. They are used to: prepare children for change and new events, help them overcome anxieties, help them become aware of what is required in set social situations and reinforce good behaviour. 

Social use of Language Programme (SULP)
SULP is a structured language programme which aims to develop the skills required for good listening and speaking as well as social interaction skills. Ways of improving self-esteem and solving friendship issues are also tackled in these groups. 

Speech and Language groups
These groups are for children who either have a speech or communication difficulty. Their difficulty can be either in their receptive and/or expressive language. Activities are based on advice from a Speech and Language Therapist. 

Thera-pressure brushing
Carried out with a Thera-pressure brush at school and by parents at home. The pressure application is immediately followed by joint compressions. It is a therapy program designed to reduce sensory or tactile defensiveness. Children who exhibit symptoms of tactile defensiveness are extremely sensitive to touch. This can cause a fear or resistance to being touched, difficulty transitioning between activities, and/or lethargy. 

Toe by toe plus
A multisensory approach to the teaching of reading and spelling by the use of daily one to one intervention and over learning of phonological knowledge. Over learning is used to help put their phonological knowledge from their short term into their long term memory. Children are encouraged to build a word phonetically rather than just guess it from context or shape. 

Wordshark is a computer program that combines the fun and excitement of bright, multi-sensory games with the serious task of learning to read and spell. The 55 colourful games are carefully designed to teach and reinforce reading and spelling using 9,000 pre-recorded words. You can also add your own word lists. The varied combinations of games and word lists create both variety and motivation. 

Write from the Start 1 and 2 –The Teodorescu Perceptuo-Motor Programme
To help develop fine-motor and perceptual skills for effective handwriting, such as hand-eye co-ordination. This is achieved through various activities such as colouring, tracking and drawing. Through this they will develop the control required for exact placement of the pencil on a specified point, skilled control over movement and the correct pressure required. 

The Wellness Group
The Wellness Group is a new group intervention that we hope will benefit all children at Roseacre. This intervention is an hour long and takes place weekly, for a six-week period. The group, taught by a trained teaching assistant, consists of 10 children from a selected year group.

Our aim is for all children to eventually have access to this group and for them to become equipped with the tools, by using the strategies taught, to manage and regulate their emotions and wellbeing themselves. 

As a school we have put a lot of work to build the children’s positive mind-set and resilience and the Wellness Group works alongside this. It aims to support children’s physical, mental and emotional health and well-being by giving children access to a variety of simple, yet effective techniques for relaxation, mindfulness and stress management, delivered in a fun and creative way. It complements the two broad aims of the School Curriculum: providing opportunities for all pupils to learn and achieve, and promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

Each session follows a step progression of: move, play, stretch, feel, breathe, believe and relax.

Move: warm up exercises, helping them keep fit and healthy in a fun way.
Play: activity games, promoting working co-operatively and turn taking, along with expanding their imaginations and developing their confidence.
Stretch: to help their balance, inner strength and power.
Feel: promoting self-awareness, empathy, respect and develop feelings vocabulary.
Breathe: breathing exercises for improved health, anxiety and inner calm.
Believe: promoting positive thinking and positive self-talk, boosting their self-esteem.
Relax: how to relax and look after themselves. 

In the Wellness Group, children learn skills that they can use every day, both in and out of the classroom. The Wellness Group gives children the opportunity to recognise, understand and deal with different feelings, as well as learning simple relaxation and concentration techniques to improve their focus and listening skills.
